Recruitment in Tough Times; the candidate’s tale Monday, April 27, 2009 Times are tough. Tough for people having to find work in an increasingly competitive environment; one in which more and more jobseekers are searching in a market characterised by a decreasing number of vacancies. So how do you give yourself that edge when applying for jobs? How do you improve your chances of getting an interview when maybe there are several hundred applicants for each job? It can be very frustrating, not to say demoralising, if all that you get is an automated rejection or, worse, hear nothing at all. Here are a few tips that should improve your chances of at least getting the opportunity to meet or talk to an employer. If you have a CV, make sure that it is accurate (beware spell checks – they like “manger” as well as “manager”), clear, concise and truthful. If you don’t have a CV, it will be worth your while getting one – most online job boards offer CV advice, as do Job Centres (also, see http://www.procognate.com/Services/cv_writing.html).
