What makes a good coach

I never cease to be amazed at the number of coaches out there these days! To think that only ten years ago few people outside of pro sports had coaches.

So what makes a good coach? How do you tell a good coach from a bad coach - I hear/read that there a lot of bad coaches out there (although I have never used a coach - other than in rugby or football and they mostly just screamed at you!) Some even linked with cults and scams (or do I read the Daily Mail too much :)).

Is it a qualification (if so which qualifications are recognised and what should you look for), is it experience and recommendations from other clients. Is the fact that a coach works well with one person a guarantee that they will work well with another?

How do good coaches keep the profession from being tarnished by less professional coaches? What is the standard by which you judge being a good or bad coach anyway?

Is coaching here to stay? Or will it go the way of 'having a shrink' in the 70s and 80s - something that seems bizarre these days?
