The focus of my research is the structural and biophysical characterization of locally ordered protein networks, which are solid or semi-solid biomaterials.
Materials of this type are central to many interesting biophysical questions. For example, the structure and function of membrane-associated proteins may not remain intact when the protein is removed from the membrane because of necessary interactions between the protein and the lipid environment. Other locally ordered protein networks are implicated in disease states, such as amyloid fibrils or the branched filaments found in cataracts of the eye lens.
