Careers Adviser & IT Manager
The Careers Centre aims to provide careers information, guidance and events of the highest quality so as to help current students and recent graduates of St Andrews identify and achieve what they want to do next. This website provides excellent resources in its own right but also links you to the most useful other resources whether they be people, paper based products or electronic resources.

Purpose of Role:
To carry out the day-to-day provision of careers education, advice and guidance to students and graduates via one-to-one discussions and group work; to develop good working relationships with university staff, including academic colleagues in specified departments, enlisting their support in promoting the Careers Centre to students; to liaise with employers, specifically in relation to specific occupational areas, and also more generally, encouraging attendance at careers fairs and other campus events; to manage, develop, and maintain the IT hardware and software systems within the office, the Careers Centre website, and the Careers Computer Centre. To plan the annual get aHead event in conjunction with the Events Manager, and to assist in the delivery of the Careers Centre’s aims, objectives and policies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Careers education, advice and guidance: working with students, graduates and other users in one-to-one discussions and group work; ensuring appropriate information resources are made available to users for specific occupational areas; keeping appropriately informed and trained, including liaising with employers for these specific occupational areas.
2. IT management: Planning, developing, and maintaining IT systems within the office and Careers Centre website. This includes: Website/intranet development in HRML/Javascript/PHP/Perl/mySQL; database development in MS Access/Filemaker Pro; office 'corporate identity' with templates; budgeting for hardware turnover, specifying and purchasing hardware; PC maintenance; maintenance of Careers Computer Centre cluster; and staff training.
3. Data Protection/Freedom of Information: Act as point of contact within the office as Data Protection Officer; to have an understanding of Data Protection and FoI issues and raise concerns within the University at the appropriate level.
4. DLHE/HESA management: To collect and return the HESA DLHE return as per the HESA guidelines; to recruit, train, and oversee telephone staff during the telephone survey; to ensure that minimum statutory requirements for the survey are met.
5. Statics officer: To perform statistical calculations and advise the Careers Centre director wrt: Careers Centre management statistics; and DLHE destination statistics. To assist in the preparation of the annual report.
6. Intern management: Recruit, train, and set-goals and targets for the Careers Centre Interns; run the periodic sessions to discuss marketing and perceptions of Careers Centre within student body.
7. AGCAS contribution: contributing appropriately to the work of AGCAS and AGCAS Scotland, eg membership of committees and working groups, currently AGCAS Scotland Web Working Group.
8. Publications: writing articles for in-house newsletters Aspire and Explore, as well as IT user guides, and website content.
9. Promotion of the careers centre: contributing to the joint effort of marketing our services effectively to users, potential users, the university, employers and others.
10. Quality control: contributing to the joint goal of ensuring that high quality performance underpins all our work
