A public adjuster represents the policyholder in an insurance claim. This is commonly a homeowner's or business owner's property insurance loss (structural, personal or business contents, additional living expense (ALE), loss of rents, etc.).

- the insurance company hires either a claims adjuster or an independent adjuster to assess the claim on behalf of the insurance company.
- A policyholder hires a public adjuster to represent the policyholder in the insurance claim process.

3. negotiate with the insurance company for the best possible settlement for the policyholder.
