I studied Chemistry because I was interested in it at school, and speciallised in Environmental Chemistry because I think it is an area that is very important. Many of the chemicals currently in use have never properly been tested against current chemicals regulations so it's urgent to identify those that could be causing problems for the environment and human health. I do research not simply for a love of research (though I do like finding out the anwer to problems), but because that research can be used to help people, to make their lives better.
I am also greatly interested in politics, particularly issues relating to the environment and social justice, both of which appear to have been overlooked somewhat by the capitalist model!

I will start this job at the end of April 2007 as an Analytical Chemist, analysing samples for flame retardants such as HBCD and PBDEs. I will also be learning about LC-MS analysis and developing new methods for new compounds of regulatory interest such as PFOS (perfluorinated surfactants in Teflon, Gore-tex, Scotchguard) and pharmaceuticals/personal care products in the environment.

Environment Canada is a huge organisation covering both weather prediction, but also research into all areas of the environment such as climate change and pollution, be that legacy or current-use chemicals, ozone, mercury, in urban areas, on a regional scale, or in the Arctic. I work in the area of persistent organic pollutants, developing a new equilibrium passive sampler for current-use pesticides (and other less hydrophobic organic pollutants) so these can be assessed as to whether they constitute a risk to society & the environment.
