Contacts

These are the people in your level 1 network. These are the people that you can contact, or who can contact you, for Introduction Requests to forward professional ads etc...

Your network

This consists of all the contacts of the contacts of the contacts of your contacts (that is four levels removed from you or level n+4)... You can contact anyone in your network via your connections who will act as a link to that member.

Profile

This is the information about you and your career that members can see.

Level/Distance

The distance, or degrees of separation, between two Viadeo members is the minimum number of people an Introduction Request message must pass through in order to reach the end recipient. Two people connected are 1 degree away from each other. Two people who have a share the mutual contact are 2 degrees away, etc.

Path

A path corresponds to a links that allow an Introduction Request between two members. If you have several contacts you may have several paths to connect to a person. To see the various paths that link you to a member, click on 'Connect' on their profile.

Connect

If you would like to connect with another member, there are several paths you can use. You can ask one of your contacts to send your introduction to their own network which will in turn relay it to the end recipient (Introduction Request), or make a Connection Request.

Ads

Your ads are visible to all Viadeo members. Every member can respond to your ads or forward it to people who might be interested.

References

Contacts

If you only remember one thing, then remember that the effectiveness of Viadeo depends on the number of yourContacts.

When you register on Viadeo as a result of an invitation, the person who invited you automatically becomes your contact. This means that if you would like to get in contact with another member of the network, you may be able to request a introduction via this person.

When you are connected to a person, you can 'reach' all the people in their network, i.e. their contacts, the contacts of their contacts and so on, up to 4 levels.

As the efficiency of the introduction system depends on the number of your contacts, it is essential to maximise your network of contacts.

If you have 10 contacts, who in turn have 10 contacts, and this pattern continues for 4 levels, you can reach 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 10,000 people through your contacts.

How can you increase the number of your contacts?

You can see your list of contacts by clicking the 'Contacts' tab.

To increase your number of contacts, you need to invitepeople you know, whether or not they are already members of Viadeo, to become your contacts. To invite a person, you need only know their email address (this is necessary to prevent abuse from people seeking to spam people they do not know).

When you invite someone, they will receive an email invitation from Viadeo that invites them to join your network (if that person is already a member of Viadeo, they will be notified on their Dashboard). If that person accepts your invitation (and creates a Viadeo account if they do not have one).

Your contacts forward your requests to connect.

The whole point of Viadeo is to help you connect to people that you do not yet know, either by sending a request or introduction to connect via people you already know.

In both cases, your contacts play a key role. They are the link between you and the people you would like to contact. They forward your requests and invitations to their contacts.

It is important to ensure that you really know your contacts, as you will need them to forward your introduction requests. Remember, they may also send requests to you - by making sure that you know your contacts you can avoid unwanted requests.

Viadeo, the means to make connect...

The whole point of Viadeo is to help connect you to people that you do not yet know, either by sending a request or an invitation to connect via people you already know. This is based on the networks of each member. For example, if Mr. Smith wants to get in touch with Mr. Stevens and both share a connection with Mr. Little, they will connect through Mr. Little. Mr. Smith will write an introduction message for Mr. Stevens and request his connection, Mr. Little, to forward this to Mr. Stevens.

Mr. Little can agree or refuse to forward Mr. Smith's request to the recipient. In turn, Mr. Stevens can accept or decline the introduction request. If Mr. Stevens accepts, his email address and contact information will be sent - if he so wishes - to Mr. Smith who will then be able to contact him directly.

This process is familiar to all of us in our business and social life - we use it to introduce ourselves to friends of our friends 'Can you introduce me to your friend...?'. The principle of 'knowing someone we both know' makes it possible to forward invitations without the risk of abuse or unsolicited introductions ('spam'). The principle of the 'friend of my friend' acts as a filter for unwanted communications.

With Viadeo you can variously be the sender or recipient of requests and introductions or the link between other members in your network.

You can also broadcast your needs...

If you are looking for a supplier or client, need to recruit a colleague, need an expert opinion or want to issue a request for tenders, you could find the answer from your contacts ('Do you happen to know a good lawyer in Italy specialising in ...').

When you broadcast your requests to your contacts, they can forward these to their network, if appropriate. By doing so, your request will reach a wider audience and will have more chance of being answered. This is a simple and effective way to reach a large audience with a simple click...

Viadeo is based on trust and confidence between contacts

As Viadeo relies on contacts between contacts, leveraging the trust between members and confidence in the network to provide an effective and reliable business tool. In fact, Viadeo is based on the same principles business people use to get in touch via networks in 'real life'. Viadeo, however, greatly improves and extends the reach of offline networks.

Now all you have to do is to try Viadeo...

Its your turn!
